General Information Child Support Recovery Unit (CSRU)

What services does CSRU provide? CSRU is responsible for assisting families to achieve and maintain economic self-sufficiency by establishing and enforcing child and medical support orders and processing support payments. Other services provided by CSRU include:
- Locating non-custodial parents and their sources of income (including employers)
- Establishing paternity
- Establishing and modifying support orders
- Registering other states' orders for enforcement or modification
CSRU uses a variety of methods to enforce support orders, including:
- Directing employers to withhold a portion of wages
- Intercepting federal and state tax refunds
- Taking money from accounts or financial institutions
- Restricting the issuance of drivers, professional and recreational licenses, motor vehicle registrations, and passports
- Making referrals to credit agencies
- Obtaining contempt of court orders against delinquent payors
Who is eligible to receive services from the Child Support Recovery Unit?
- Parents who are receiving or who have received public assistance (Family Investment Program benefits, Medicaid, and/or Foster Care).
- Parents who apply for establishment and/or enforcement services.

Whom should I contact for answers about child support? Customers may use several methods to get information about child support in general or about their specific case.
- Visit the Iowa Child Support website at https://secureapp.dhs.state.ia.us/childsupport/welcome.asp
- Telephone: An automated system is available 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Customers can get information by calling 641-844-5390 in the Des Moines area or 1-888-229-9223 nationwide.
- Customer Service Unit: Callers can use the above numbers to talk with customer service specialists from 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM Central Time, Monday through Friday (except state holidays).
Structure: The following units provide child support services:
- The Child Support Recovery Unit has 24 offices throughout the state, organized into 4 regions, which establish and enforce child support.
- The Employers Partnering in Child Support Unit is a "one-stop" service center for employers which handles contacts from employers, income withholding orders, medical support enforcement, and levies of accounts.
- The Customer Service Unit takes calls from case parties who have questions about their case and from callers who have questions about child support services.
- The Collection Services Center receives and distributes child support payments. It operates as Iowa's State Disbursement Unit (SDU). Address for sending payments: Collection Services Center, PO Box 9125, Des Moines, IA 50306.
