Clarinda Mental Health Institute

The Clarinda Mental Health Institute provides a full range of diagnostic and treatment services through its Acute Psychiatric Program.  The facility's Geropsychiatric Program provides nursing home beds for persons with mental illness.

Who is eligible to receive services:

The Acute Psychiatric Program serves Iowans who are 18 years of age and over and have a serious mental illness.

The Geropsychiatric Program provides long-term care to adult Iowans with chronic psychiatric and behavioral problems and who meet the Iowa Foundation for Medical Care (IFMC) guidelines for nursing home level of care and whose behaviors are such that community-based facilities cannot manage the resident.

How to apply for services or refer someone to this facility:

Acute Psychiatric Program referrals are made through the local mental health center prescreening process, or commitment by the court system.

Structure of the organization:

The facility is operated by the Iowa Department of Human Services, under the directorship of Charles J. Krogmeier and under the leadership of Sally Titus, Deputy Director for Field Operations.  The facility's superintendent is Mark Lund.

Registered nurses, licensed practical nurses and residential treatment workers, who are supervised by Becky Shilhanek, Director of Nursing, provide direct-care services to individuals.  The psychologist and social worker, who are supervised by the psychology supervisor, provide direct clinical services.

Services provided:

Inpatient psychiatric services for adults and geropsychiatric patients are provided.

The Center for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) certifies psychiatric services.  Nursing home level services are certified under the Ombudsman Reconciliation Act of 1987 (OBRA).

People served:

The facility is located in Clarinda.  The Acute Psychiatric Program serves persons for fifteen counties in southwest Iowa and the Geropsychiatric Program serves persons for all ninety-nine counties.

For several years, the facility has received excellent surveys from the CMS and OBRA.

The facility has been innovative in effectively utilizing state property for additional purposes that also benefit the community.
